The 8th International
Conference for
the History of Science in Science Education (8th ICHSSE) will be held
in a hotel on the coast of the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. All
activities will happen at Maresias Beach Hotel.
Maresias is one of the 33 beaches belonging to the city of
Sao Sebastiao,
about 100 miles from Sao Paulo. The sea there is provided with good
waves which are appreciated by surfers. Maresias is a very busy
place during vacations, but during the Conference the beach will be
mostly empty.
August is an off-season month in
Brazil, because the vacations in the Southern hemisphere last just for
one month (July) in the middle of the year (winter). Therefore, the
beaches are usually deserted. August is a cold month for Brazilians,
but it is warm enough for people coming from Europe or North America.
Maresias
is located in the North Coast of Sao Paulo State, between the Atlantic
Ocean and the mountains of Serra do Mar, where the dominant vegetation
is the Atlantic Forest - an area with very high biodiversity. Nowadays,
only 7% of the original forest is preserved. Projects such as
SOS Mata Atlantica
work to help the preservation of the fauna and flora of the region.
Many ecological trails can be accessed to appreciate this rich
environment.
Compared to the big Brazilian cities
(such as Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro) Maresias is regarded as
a safe place.
